SERIES GUIDE

Understanding the Sonic classics

Where the series began

Sonic arrived during the 16-bit era with an identity built around momentum, bright landscapes, and routes that reward confident movement. The early Genesis games made speed feel like a skill earned through familiarity rather than an automatic effect.

What defines these games

Rings offer recoverable protection, slopes convert movement into momentum, and stages support both quick upper lines and slower exploratory routes. That combination gives repeated runs a different character as the player learns the terrain.

Where to start

Begin with the original for the fundamentals, then Sonic 2 for the Spin Dash and larger set pieces. Sonic Advance brings the formula to GBA and adds four characters whose abilities reveal different routes.

Why these entries are here

The first two Genesis releases make the series’ early growth easy to compare: the original establishes its physics and the sequel increases route density and spectacle. Sonic Advance then tests that identity on new hardware with expressive animation and character-specific traversal. Together they show a clear design lineage across home console and handheld play rather than three interchangeable speed runs.

Sonic games in this collection

The current Sonic archive spans original releases from 1991 to 2001 and includes Genesis and GBA. Every entry links to a dedicated page with its developer, genre, controls, historical context, and availability status. The scope is intentionally selective so that each addition contributes a distinct reason to explore the series instead of simply increasing a platform count.
